I'm a Chartered Engineer; I studied engineering at university; I served with the Royal Engineers, gaining an MSc in engineering in the process; and I ran an engineering company for 9 years.
You would think that I don't have a lot of time for "touchy feely" stuff like creativity, right?
Creativity is actually at the heart of engineering. Think about it. In order to transform, manufacture, move, or improve something, a great deal of effort and thought goes into how to do this efficiently. So engineers actually revel in creativity (almost as much as they like revelling in oil and grease!).
I'm a STEM ambassador for schools (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), but have long advocated that this powerful mix should instead be "STEAM" because we need to add the arts. A fusion of these five disciplines will be vital to transform our economy to the new carbon-neutral model we need to exist in a sustainable way.
The problem is that most small businesses (which account for about 95% of all businesses in the UK) are fighting to compete with large corporates.
By ensuring these bigger companies pay their fair share of their taxes, rather than just what they can legally get away with, then smaller businesses will have that little bit extra capacity to release creativity.
We need to encourage the different disciplines to interact and learn from each other - this is not only amazingly power, but also enormous fun.
Creativity unlocks enormous potential in almost every professional endeavour
If you've never seen the film "Dead Poets Society" with Robin Williams, I highly recommend it.
Williams plays an inspirational school teacher who explains to his class:
"And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."
Yes. We need to fund the arts. We also need to support an increase in localised media to deliver truthful, independent reporting and address the bias we are exposed to daily.
Unlike other parties, we do not get support form large organisation and companies
